On Operative Treatment of Cavernous Tuberculosis of the Lung
Erling Refsum
Abstract
At the end of the year 1962 on the TBC register in the N.M.C.T.B.C. station in
Choong Koo were registered 225 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis.
On account of the extension of the pulmonary processes and resistance of the tubercle
bacilli to 2 or 3 of the three main anti-tuberculous drug, therapy and surgical treatment.
This is about 10% of all registered cases of pulmonary tuberculosis and about 20% of
the registered infection cases.
My intention with this lecture has been to show you that good results can be
achieved with different kinds of active treatment of cavernous pulmonary tuberculosis
without any additional anti-tuberculous drug therapy. In Korea at the time most of the
tuberculous patients can be treated with drugs with the possibility of some effect, at
any rate, with secondary drugs. In spite of the high percentage of patients with bacilli
demonstrated to have a reduced sensitivity to the main drugs, we can here at the time
expect a considerable better result than what I have reported.
We need in Korea, however, more facilities for active, individualized treatment of
tuberculous patients.
